The mapping project I explored was Mapping Gothic France on http://mappinggothic.org/map. Personally, I love exploring old buildings, relics, and artifacts in general. Seeing the things on this map opens my eyes to how impacted Europe really was from the Gothic era. I especially love this project as I’m a visual person, and love to explore and study things visually rather than reading or learning through audio (it’s not fun having a short attention span!). An additional thing that I really enjoy about the site is that they go into depth about the history of certain sites, even including the layout of the structure of the building and even the elevation.

The only thing that especially was not enjoyable for me while browsing is that the page constantly kept notifying me that “Google Maps can’t load the page correctly”. I completely understand that there will be glitches on sites and various projects, but they should probably fix that. Other than that, I have no complaints and is overall a great mapping project!

  1. I think it’s interesting that you describe, what seems to be an inevitable tradeoff when it comes to digitizing these works. While on one hand, it provides that visual form of learning you prefer, it comes at a cost of potentially not working or having glitches. I think it’s important we start talking about these tradeoffs in class, especially with potential harms in visual learning, such as misleading/missing information.

  2. Gothic French art and architecture sounds like a fascinating topic that I’ve never thought much about before. It is really cool to see how beautiful a lot of these buildings and artworks are. Even many decades after they were created, they are still standing strong and looking very impressive.

  3. Reading this allowed me to see how mapping projects can be a great visual tool for showing historical info visually, so its cool you chose a project like this. I agree with you on the glitches issues, with projects, they should try their best to have the project be tuned out the best it can so the user can get the most out of the experience. good read though!
